Characterization of Soil and Groundwater in Construction Sites

 ESI’s Overall Experience

For the past 23 years, ESI’s client base included major construction firms and public agencies involved in large infrastructure projects.  ESI has completed numerous public work projects assisting major construction firms that include but are not limited to Kiewit Pacific Company, Flatiron Constructors, Inc., Shimmick Construction, Turner Construction, Brosamer Wall, Inc. California Engineering Inc., Golden State Bridge, and Malcolm Drilling in complying with environmental issues related to handling and disposal of contaminated soil and groundwater, as well as health and safety of construction workers for the duration of the projects.

Site Investigations

ESI’s involvement in various infrastructure projects also include soil sampling and performing laboratory analysis to evaluate vertical and horizontal extent of potential contamination for the purpose of characterization of site’s soil for either on-site reuse or off-site disposal.

Tasks comprised of:

  • Collection of soil samples from drilled holes, trenches, potholes and stockpile materials.

  • Evaluation of analytical results for soil contaminants such as heavy metals and petroleum hydrocarbons, analyzing results in relation to California State Water Resource Control Board Environmental Screening Levels for soil (SWRCB-ESLs), California Title 22 Regulations, and comparison with the permitted landfill’s acceptance requirements.

  • Depending on the concentrations of organic and inorganic compounds in the soil, ESI recommends measures to protect the health and safety of the workers, as well as off-site disposal of the material at a permitted Class 1 (hazardous) and/or Class 2 (non-hazardous) landfill facilities.

  • Evaluation of groundwater analytical results compared to applicable environmental standards to determine suitability and compliance for discharge into sewer systems and/or requiring treatment and discharge into surface water under the national pollution discharge elimination system (NPDES).

  • Preparation of reports by certified professionals summarizing the sampling findings and recommendations, as mentioned above.
